Mercedes-Benz Wishes Smaller Cars for US Market

 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

For years, Mercedes-Benz has been known for the luxury vehicles supplier for US market and in term of sales figures, the three-pointed German automaker is pretty much done a good job keeping up with Lexus and alongside with local rival – BMW. That does not seem enough for Mercedes-Benz USA as they want to focus on adding market share by taking the almost un-noticeable segment – the FWD or front-wheel drive compact cars.  Now, what kind of army does Mercedes-Benz has to invade that kind of market?

Our best shot is some versions of the redesigned Mercedes-Benz C-Class that might be scheduled for launched in 2014. So, Mercedes-Benz will be invading FWD compact car segment in just one model? Think again because you miss the existence of the A-Class which was a big No-No for the Mercedes-Benz USA. To attract more customers and to convince the execs of the Mercedes-Benz USA, the R&D department has presented a sleek design of A-Class concept that probably will be unveiled on the New York Auto Show this year.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Other model that offered by Mercedes-Benz USA for the FWD compact car segment will be the B-Class. This one is intended to be the “cheapest” model and might available in sedan in crossover soon. Just so you know, the term “cheapest” for you, us, and Mercedes-Benz definitely different because to the German automaker, “cheapest” could be worth twice of our budget.

Back to the C-Class, the Mercedes-Benz USA could be offering the FWD compact car in hybrid and clean diesel variants. For the larger segment, the German auto manufacturer will be preparing for the CL coupe that is currently undergoing a facelift process and let’s not forget about the S-Class that hits the US market in 2013. For us, Mercedes-Benz USA is ready to battle on the aforementioned market segment, don’t you think?

Rendering Image of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Convertible

Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series Convertible rendering image

Do you know why the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series has certain attraction? Piston Heads user under the name of “Tuvra” knows that very well as he got bored in the office and creating the rendering image of the C63 AMG Black Series in convertible. Yup… it does complete the line-up, doesn’t it? We have seen the Coupe version, the spyshots of the sedan version, and now thanks to Tuvra, we have the convertible sportscar version.

Question: why the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series is so familiar? That is because the convertible coupe in high-performance reminds us with the SLS AMG GT3, don’t you think? What do you think if we or maybe Tuvra proposed this rendering image to the three-pointed automaker, will they accept it and will make the production version? Or maybe in the form of concept first? We don’t know what Mercedes would think, but we think this image is awesome!

The choices of tires for the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series are set of 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels that are covered in titanium grey paint. As for the exterior color scheme, Tuvra selected anthracite tone for fierce look.

Imagining that Mercedes-Benz will take the C63 AMG Black Series convertible into production, it probably will be powered by a 6.3L V8 AMG engine. That particular engine is able to deliver 517 horsepower and mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed sports transmission.

Spyshots: Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series

Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series Sedan

We have seen the coupe version, and now its time to see the sedan version of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series. Yup… we spotted the prototype of the C63 AMG Black Series sedan running around at the ‘Ring – Nurburgring – with no camouflage sheet on. We draw some possibilities regarding the less camouflage sheet, we think that this prototype could be at the final stage of development; or this is an early prototype that which will be the marking some ground points for the more upgrading version of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series.

Judging by the photos, the prototype Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series sedan has wider front and rear tracks, with the aerodynamic items that also functioned as a visual role to bring a fierce look. This prototype has been scheduled to hit the European market next year. Now that explains why the C63 AMG Black Series sedan has less camouflage sheet on it.

On the engine and performance part, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series sedan might be powered by naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 which is being replaced by the twin-turbo 5.5L V8 that again, it follows the same engine for the coupe. With top speed reaches at 517 horsepower. Should we refer the C63 AMG Black Series sedan as sportscar sedan instead of ordinary sedan?

Strip Off the Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG Engine

 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK 55 AMG

If we ask you, can you describe the Mercedes-Bens SLK 55 AMG, what will you answer? Here are some choices of words: sportscar (obviously), sleek, masculine yet feminine, fine work or art, and expensive. The fist time we heard about the SLK 55 AMG, our head was filled with imaginations in the form of the overall look and of course, the engine. Just thinking how the engine sound would be makes us shivering.

You know what kind of engine powered the Mercedes-Bens SLK 55 AMG sportscar, don’t you? To refresh your memory and we just never bored to mention this one particular engine over and over (and over) again. The naturally aspirated M157 5.5L V8. The “M157” code feels like we refer to some kind of secret code name on the James Bond movie.

Don’t be fooled by the “naturally-aspirated” because when it comes to the SLK 55 AMG, Mercedes-Benz never seemed too stingy. We pretty much aware here that this engine is replacing the old 6.2L V8, but we also have no doubt that the three-pointed engineers are doing their best to give – at least – the same amount of power despite cut down the size engine into 5.5L. Now, what have the engineers done to make the Mercedes-Bens SLK 55 AMG still be one of the most wanted sportscar?

The answer to that question will be “twin-turbo”. Yup… the SLK 55 AMG has 5.5L V8 naturally-aspirated engine with twin-turbo or we usually refer as the “dynamic duo”. It doesn’t stop there because Mercedes loaded the sportscar with more sophisticated performance parts namely variable valve timing, direct injection, stop-start button, and the highlight feature of all – the Cylinder Management courtesy of AMG. This unique system has functioned to send all 4 cylinders to at rest – Mercedes refers it as “sleep” – when they are not in used.

Those not-so-complicated engine and performance system under the hood of the Mercedes-Bens SLK 55 AMG guarantee to give fuel economy usage up to 8.4L per 100 km which if we converse it, hit around 28 mpg. Notice that the figure is for “normal” use; as when you take the sportscar for your daily ride. But if you step in the gas pedal on the Autobahn, that’s different story and definitely will set up new fuel not-so-efficient usage figure. Want to take the SLK 55 AMG for a sprint? Not moving your feet from the throttle will take the sportscar from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

Rumor: Mercedes-Benz Working on Baby SLS?

Mercedes-Benz SLS concept

What does Mercedes-Benz have to challenge the new Porsche 911? The answer is none – for now. But rumor has it that the three-pointed German automaker is working on the baby SLS sportscar and keeps everything in a complete hush-hush. The rumor might be caused by the Jaguar which introduced the C-X16 Concept and because so many socialite that ready to spend their cash to have a smaller version of SLS AMG supercar that reaches 500 units so far. So, how will the Mercedes-Benz SLS look like?

We scooped some online forums and found out that the mysterious baby Mercedes-Benz SLS sportscar still be in the form of coupe. Just like its other SLS siblings, the sportscar will be offered in cabriolet model too – but both will stick as a two-seater vehicle. Okay, we get the overall look for the baby SLS, but what engine will it have?

The baby Mercedes-Benz SLS might be powered by the new engine courtesy of AMG in the form of 5.5L twin-turbocharged V8. That engine probably will be coupled to a twin-clutch 7–speed transmission which means that the total power output can be as much as 500 horsepower.

Other engine option will be the naturally aspirated version of the V8 which also powered the 2012 SLK 55 AMG just to draw the line between the SLK and SLS. With 500 horsepower, the baby Mercedes-Benz SLS has top speed 184 mph (300km/h) and able to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in about 4 seconds.
