The latest 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback celebrated its world premiere in April this year and is scheduled to arrive at dealer showrooms in Germany from this fall. Expected to become a sales hit, the new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback entered production this past weekend in Puebla, Mexico, as Volkswagen has announced.

The Puebla plant is the largest automobile factory in Mexico and one of the Volkswagen Group’s biggest vehicle manufacturing plants. It supplies North and South America as well as Europe with the new Jetta volume model; soon, the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback will join the production line-up.

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback and Volkswagen Golf variant are built exclusively by Volkswagen de Mexico for world markets. In 2010, the factory produced some 435,000 vehicles. Puebla also manufactures engines for the American continent and with its workforce of over 15,000 is one of Mexican industry’s largest employers.

“The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback is a strong symbol of our brand. It combines the emotional heritage of the original Beetle with the future of Volkswagen,” Hubert Waltl said in Puebla. “At the same time, the new 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback and the engine plant we are building in Silao represent the great confidence we place in Mexico as a manufacturing location. As one of the main manufacturers of compact class vehicles, Volkswagen de México is a key building block in our growth strategy for North America.”

Volkswagen is currently working on the Beetle R version of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback, which is likely to make its debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this September. As the hottest version in the line-up the Beetle R version of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle coupe hatchback, rumored to come as a front-wheel drive car, is to be powered by the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that’s found in the Golf GTI and Beetle Turbo, developing some 240 horsepower.

Jay Leno versus 1938 and 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

1938 Volkswagen Beetle Jay Leno versus 1938 and 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

We don’t really know what it is about this guy that we like, but Jay Leno just seems to have an honest way of describing cars. In addition, there are very few people, if any, in the world who have a bigger passion for everything that moves (cars, bikes trucks…you name it) or possesses a bigger collection of vehicles.

While in Germany, Jay Leno dropped by at the AMG factory, where he assisted in the assembly of an AMG 6.3 V8 for the SLS AMG. The TV host even got to play around in the electric version – the SLS AMG E-CELL.

Jay Leno didn’t stop there, as he also stooped by Wolfsburg, giving the oldest ever Beetle – the 1938 Volkswagen Beetle – in existence and the brand new one – the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle – a back to back comparison. We’re reminded just how cool the old model is, and how thoughtfully it was put together, great attention having been paid to proper headroom and engine reliability. Click here to watch the video.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle Jay Leno versus 1938 and 2012 Volkswagen Beetle

The 1938 Volkswagen Beetle which driven by Jay Leno might be good to drive at 10 mph (16 km/h), but for the real kicks you’ll have to go for the poky 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, a mix of retro styling and modern creature comforts. Jay Leno quickly gets behind the wheel of the VW’s latest offering in 2.0-liter form, with a sunroof and air conditioning. The engine comes from the Golf GTI, produces 200 horsepower and is mated to a double-clutch gearbox.

Jay Leno who is famous for his chat show, correctly points out how much the Beetle has change into more of a sportscar than the previous generation, due to the responsive engine and a type of gearbox that wasn’t even available on a Lamborghini some years back. It’s not really a revolution, this car, more of an evolution, and its granddaddy is surely proud; and we believe Jay Leno is also proud to be the first person to test the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.
